State Enterprise “National Nuclear Energy Generating Company “Energoatom” was established in October, 1996. The Company is the operator of all running nuclear power plants of Ukraine. Its main task is to increase electricity production and the NPPs’ capacity factor while ensuring continued improvement of the operational safety.
The four nuclear power plants - Zaporizhzhya, Rivne, South-Ukraine and Khmelnytsky NPPs, as well as “Atomproectenginiring”, “Atomremontservis”, “Scientific and Technical Center”, “Emergency and Technical Center”, “Atomenergomash”, “Atomkomplekt”, “Ukrenergoeffektyvnist”, “Warehouse”, and “Administrative Department” are the separated subdivisions of NNEGC “Energoatom”.
Today there are fifteen power units in operation at the sites of Ukrainian NPPs, with thirteen represented by a VVER-1000 reactor installation, and the remaining two – by VVER-440. Ukraine ranks eighth in the world and fifth in Europe in terms of the total installed capacity of NPPs.
Pursuant to the Law of Ukraine on the Use of Nuclear Power and Radiation Safety, NNEGC “Energoatom” is entrusted with functions of an operating organization accountable for the safety of all Ukrainian NPPs. Furthermore, the main task of “Energoatom” is construction of new power capacities and life extension for the existing ones, procurement of new and transportation of spent nuclear fuel, establishment of the national infrastructure for management of irradiated fuel, ensuring physical security of nuclear power industry facilities, personnel professional training and development, resolution of social issues of the Company employees, etc.
